How to configure up-sells, cross-sells and related products in Magento
In Magento you can establish different product relations to help you increase your sales. To each of the products that you have added to your catalog you can relate other products. These other products can be treated as just related products, they can be up-sells or cross-sells.
When you add related products to a particular product, these related products are shown in a block on the product details page of the product. They can be any products that are in some way similar or related to the product which the customer is viewing. Up-sells are products that are more expensive and better in some way than the product to which they are related; they are also displayed on the product details page. Cross-sells on the other hand are shown on the cart page. You can use cross-sells to offer your customers products that can be put in the cart just before the checkout process.
All these product relations are set up in the same way. In the admin panel of your Magento go to Catalog>Manage Products, click on the Edit button of the product to which you want to add related products, up-sells and/or cross-sells. On the left side of the page that opens there are buttons labeled Related Products, Up-sells and Cross-sells. Depending on the product relation that you want to set up click on one of these buttons. On the page that opens on the right click on the Reset Filter button and the products in your catalog will be shown in the table under it. Mark the checkboxes of the products that you want to relate to the product that you're editing and click on the Save or on the Save and Continue Edit button. This process is exactly the same for related products, up-sells and cross-sells.
After that flush the Magento cache and refresh the frontend of your site to check the result.
