How to add and manage states and regions in PrestaShop 1.5-1.6

In PrestaShop you can add and edit the administrative units of any of the existing countries. What's meant here is the top-level administrative units in the country. It doesn't matter what the label for the units is in the particular country (e.g. states, provinces, regions, etc.). PrestaShop comes preconfigured with the states/regions for some countries (the U.S., Canada, Mexico, etc.).

Here we'll briefly go over the process of managing states/regions. For some more details and screenshots check out the tutorial on how to manage states and regions in PrestaShop 1.5-1.6.

Add States

To add a state/region, go to Localization menu>States sub-menu and on the page that opens click on the button Add new state (in PrestaShop 1.5 it's Add new). This will open a new page with a few options. Type the name of the state in the respective field, select the country and zone to which it belongs from the corresponding drop-down menus. From the Status option you can activate and deactivate the state. If it's activated, it can be selected when addresses are added.

You also have to type the ISO code for the state/region in the field labeled ISO code. The format that's used for this option is ISO 3166-2. It consists of the code for the country, followed by a hyphen and the code for the region. In this field you only have to type the part for the region (e.g. AK for Alaska), not the whole code. You can find more information about this ISO code format on the Wikipedia page on ISO 3166-2.

After you're done with the settings click on the Save button.

Edit, Enable, Disable and Delete States

To manage existing states, go to Localization menu>States sub-menu. On the page that opens there's a table that lists the states/regions that have already been added. To edit the options of a state, click on its Edit button in the table (in PrestaShop 1.5 it's an icon that looks like pencil). The options are the same as when adding a state.

To delete a state, click on the arrow that's next to its Edit button and select Delete. In PrestaShop 1.5 the button is a trash can icon.

In the table that lists the states there's a column Enabled. It indicates with green checkmarks the enabled states and with red X symbols the disabled ones. To enable/disable a state, click on the checkmark/X sign and it will turn into the opposite symbol.

If you want to enable, disable, delete or assign to a different zone more than one state at the same time, mark the checkboxes in front of the names of the states, select the action from the drop-down menu below the table and click on the Apply button next to it.

Activate State Selection for Countries

When you add new states/regions and you choose to which country the state should belong, you can select only from those countries that have their Contains states option enabled. To enable this option for the particular country, go to Localization menu>Countries sub-menu, edit the country and set its Contain states option to Yes.
