How to configure Outlook Express to connect to an email account

Outlook Express is an email client that comes with Windows XP and also with older Windows operating systems (e.g. Windows 98, Windows 2000). There is also a Mac version for Mac OS 9; its successor is called Microsoft Entourage and it comes prepackaged with Microsoft Office for Mac.

Before you set Outlook Express to connect to your account you have to create one from the Email section of the Pixie control panel. If you don't know how to do this, read the tutorial on creating an email account.

After you open Outlook Express go to the Tools menu and select Accounts. In the window that opens click on the Add button, then on Mail. Then there will be a succession of pages on which you have to provide the necessary information.

First, you'll be asked to type your name. After you do it click on Next to go to the next window. Then you have to type your full email address. After that you have to choose whether you want to use POP3 or IMAP as an incoming mail protocol, and you also have to type the names of the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server.

In case you want to use encryption (SSL/TLS) with your mail type the name or IP address of the HostKnox server hosting your account (both for incoming and outgoing). If you don't want to use SSL/TLS you can type just your domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com), provided it points to our servers.

Once you have provided the names for the servers click on Next. On the next window you have to type your full email address in the Account Name field and the password in the Password field. That is the last step.

After the account is added you have to configure some additional options. On the Accounts window that is still open click on the Mail tab, select the email account you just added and then click on the Properties button. On the Properties window click on the Servers tab and mark the checkbox for My server requires authentication. Then click on the Advanced tab and change the port number for Outgoing mail (SMTP) from 25 to 587.

If you want to enable encryption for your email account, mark the checkboxes for This server requires secure connection (SSL) under both outgoing and incoming mail; then change the port number for outgoing mail to 465. You don't have to change the port number for incoming mail. It will be set automatically.
